Evaluation of Performance and Emission Characteristics of Apricot and Papaya Biodiesel in CI Engine

Abstract

Objectives: Biodiesel, achieve great appreciation all over the world and also endorses its outcome on the Compression Ignition (CI) engine emission. In this study author focused on the production of biodiesel from papaya and apricot oils and its implementation on CI engine. Methods: Papaya and apricot oils have low fatty acids values and were processed by single step transesterification process, in that process methanol were used as alcohol, KOH and chicken egg shell derived CaO are used as catalyst. The performance and emissions characteristics of biodiesel blends with diesel were inspected for biodiesel in single cylinder CI engine. In performance tests 4 stroke stationary agricultural diesel engine was used and for measurement of emissions parameters, the equipment NPM-MGA-1 exhaust gas analyser was employed. Finding: The maximum yield percentage was achieved by using KOH as catalyst for both apricot seeds oil and papaya seeds oil, noted as 91% and 94%. The properties of biodiesel was investigated and found (density, Calorific value, flash point, fire point, etc.) nearer to fossil fuel properties. Application: The performance and emissions characteristics of biodiesel blends with diesel were inspected for biodiesel and founded that B20 and B30 of papaya seed biodiesel and apricot seed biodiesel have improved fuel properties, brake power, BSFC (Brake Specific Fuel Consumption), brake thermal efficiency and emissions characteristics while NOx was rises.
