Objective: Assessment of sustainable development of rural areas is based on the calculation ofthe complex integral index in terms of the three elements of sustainable development: economic, social and environmental. Methods: The "transformed polygon" method has been used as a tool of the integrated assessment of sustainable development of rural areas. Findings: The paper presents the results of a study of sustainable development of rural territories of the Russian Federation for the period of 2005-2015. The analysis leads to the conclusion about the positive dynamics of the complex integral index of sustainability of rural territories of the Russian Federation, which is largely due to the growth of economic indicators. At the same time, special attention should be given to the environmental problems and issues regarding the improvement of the level and quality of life of the rural population. Applications: The results of the study can be used by public authorities and governing bodies to form a system of measures to ensure the sustainable development of rural areas.
