Simulation of Ultra-Thin Plasmonic Solar Cell for Efficency Enhancement

Abstract

This article simulates ultra-thin plasmonic solar cell using Finite Element Method (FEM) in order to increase the efficiency of solar cell. This paper studied the change in thickness of silica dielectric layer (SiO2 ) and change in the kind of dielectric used as absorbent. Finite element method that superior that other methods and physical devices that divided into smaller elements are used in order to solar cell simulation. In these method electromagnetic problems are solved by time domain method or frequency method. Since efficiency of ultra-thin solar cells is low due to its low thickness, absorption of light in cell and efficiency can be increased by using metal nanowires in cell structure. Because metal nanowires support surface plasmons polariton that are electromagnetic waves paired with collective fluctuations in metal surface. It is shown that by changing thickness of absorbent material and change in dielectric material, light absorption and gain can be increased.
