Effect of urea doping on spectral, optical and thermal properties of L-histidine crystals

Abstract

The organic nonlinear optical materials pure and urea-doped L-histidine crystals were grown by slow solvent evaporation method at the room temperature of 32 °C. The effect of doping urea on the spectral, optical, and thermal properties of L-histidine crystals has been investigated. Single crystal X-ray diffraction study was performed to know the structural characterization of the grown crystals and it shows slight structural changes as a result of doping. The XRD data reveals that both the crystals crystallize in the non-centro symmetric space group P212121. The FT-Raman and 13C-NMR spectra have been recorded for qualitative analysis and identification of the compounds. The optical transmittance study was performed to analyze the transparency of the grown crystals and found that the transparency was excellent in the wavelength region 235-1200 nm. The optical absorption coefficient α has been analyzed and the optical band gap of the grown crystals was estimated to be 5.28eV. Second harmonic generation of the grown crystals of this work was confirmed by the emission of green radiation using Nd:YAG laser. The surface morphologies of the crystals were analyzed by HR-SEM analysis. Differential scanning calorimetry technique (DSC) indicates that there is no phase transition takes place below 276 °C. Preliminary studies show that the grown crystals are suitable for optoelectronics applications and SHGs.
