Huge amounts of data are nowadays collected and stored by organizations with the hope of them being useful in the future. Big data is not only used by organizations to seek better insights for improving the quality of their service and profit, but it can be also used to achieve a variety of targets where success is dependent on the smart analysis. Using big data to gain new insights could help in improving the organization’s performance and leads the organization towards competitive advantage. Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) has access to data which can be managed and used for the improvement in teaching and learning for faculty members and students, and can be used by management in making decision. Thus, the objective of this paper is to discuss on issues, challenges and opportunities of big data management in HEIs and propose a research model for big data management at HEIs in Malaysia.
