Objectives: To present a guide for decision making when replacing a low-efficiency three-phase electric motor with a high efficiency three-phase motor and the technical and economic factors that must be considered in said process. Methods/ Analysis: This study is making use of a methodology based on the multi-criteria selection method called AHP (Analytical Hierarchical Process), which is a formal instrument for the evaluation and selection of alternatives, with solid mathematical foundations and simple in its application. Findings: For centrifugal applications, special care must be taken when selecting a high efficiency motor, since due to the effect described by the affinity laws the energy consumption will be greater than expected. Improvements: A possible solution to reduce the effects of higher consumption in centrifugal loads would be the use of Frequency Variators or change of pulley ratio.
