Removal of Nickel by Adsorption from Aqueous Solution by Cellulose Acetate-Zero Valent Iron Nanoparticle Mixed Matrix Membrane

Abstract

Contamination of water resources by industrial effluents is very critical to the environment due to its high toxicity. Objective: The present work aims to develop a potential membrane for removal of nickel from aqueous solutions. Method/ Analysis: Cellulose acetate membranes with and without Zero Valent Iron nanoparticles (ZVI) were prepared by phase inversion method. The removal of nickel ions from aqueous solution was studied by vacuum filtration process and the results demonstrate that membrane with ZVI showed better performance. Hence, further experiments were carried out using a membrane with ZVI. The influence of variables such as contact time, initial pH of the solution, adsorbent dosage and initial ion concentration on the adsorption capacity of the membranes were investigated in a batch adsorption mode. Findings: Maximum removal efficiency of nickel was found to be 96%. The adsorption isotherms were better fitted by both Langmuir and Freundlich model. Applications: Based on the experiments, it can be established that cellulose acetate membranes with nano particles are more effective for removal of nickel from aqueous solution.
